Ex-Khilgaon OC jailed 3 years for torturing DU student

gimg-2011-07-28-95619DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced Helal Uddin, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station, to three years rigorous imprisonment in a case filed by Dhaka University (DU) student Abdul Kader for torturing him in custody. First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Md Alamgir Kabir Raj handed down the verdict in the afternoon.

The court also fined the fugitive former police officer Tk 10,000, in default, he will suffer another three months in prison.

The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, said the court.

Kader, a former student of biochemistry and molecular biology, filed the case against Helal Uddin on Jan 23, 2012 for torturing him in custody after his arrest in 2011.

According to case details, plainclothes police personnel arrested him on July 16, 2011 while he was returning to Fazlul Haque Hall of DU from one of his relatives’ residence at Eskaton in the capital city.

Later, Kader joined as a teacher at Lakshmipur Government College after passing BCS (education).
