BD missions worldwide observes Int’l Mother Language day

World community will observe International Mother Language today. The international day has been observed every year throughout the UNESCO member states on Feb. 21 since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingual education. On the occasion of the Day, UNESCO reiterates its position on the importance of appropriate languages of instruction and will organize Seminar and Workshop today at its office in Paris says UNESCO website release.

UNESCO in Iran commemorates Intl. Mother Language Day on Wednesday reports Tehran Times. The director and representative of UNESCO in Tehran, Esther Kuisch Laroche expressed her attitude towards the mother language day. SIL International will participate in celebrations in several International Mother Language Day related events in locations around the world.

On 23 February in Washington, DC SIL will focus on “Language Diversity and its Impact on Poverty and Economic Integration in a Changing World.  It has programmes in New York, Democratic Republic of Congo and in Ziguinchor, Senegal says SIL media release.

Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day will be observed in Bangladesh missions abroad with due solemnity and in befitting manner.

The day’s programme starts with hoisting of the National Flags at half-mast by the heads of mission in presence of the officials as well as the members of Bangladesh community in respective countries, reports received here yesterday said

Besides, the messages issued by the President, Prime Minister and the foreign Minister on the occasion will be read out in missions. A one-minute silence will be observed as a mark of profound respect to the martyrs of 1952 Language Movement, followed by recitation from the Holy Quran. Special munajats will also be offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country. The day’s programmes also included discussions on Amar Ekushey with the participation of professionals, academics, elites, Unesco officials and expatriate Bangladeshis highlighting the significance of the day.

The Embassy of Bangladesh, Washington, DC, constructed a temporary “Shaheed Minar” in the Embassy premises.   Ambassador Mohammad Ziauddin, Ambassador of the mission expected to  lay flower wreath at the newly built “Shaheed Minar” today night .   Members of Bangladesh Community in the United States are invited to attend the occasion says Bangladesh mission in Washington’s website release.  Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra will observe the day in a befitting manner says its website’s announcement. They will attend in Probhat Feri at the Shahid Minar by the High Commission followed by members of the Bangladeshi community the announcement says. News about observance of Amar Ekushey was received so far from Bangladesh missions in Washington DC, Canberra, Tehran, Bangkok and some other cities of the world.
